Pastor, Do You Want the Church you Lead to Have Healthy Conversion Growth?

  • CERTAINLY! - Then you must retain those who are born again. And anyone can learn how to be effective.
  • A strategy is needed to retain and develop converts. Mastering Disciple-making provides an easy-to-implement sustainable system.
  • Do you lack the time to develop course material and follow-up plan? That is where we come in.

The Reason for Mastering Disciple-making

  • Thirty years ago, I heard Roger Skluzacek's short presentation on Discipleship. Roger  emphasized the importance of keeping new converts. More importantly, Roger shared details of what was being done to develop new converts.

I realized that what Roger was talking about was my key.

    I'm not a super preacher.
I'm an introvert, so people do not follow me out of a cafe to go be baptized.
I don't like administration, and only do it if I have to.
My late grandfather had been a much better pastor than I was or ever would be.
And periodically, I'd battle an illness known as Major Depressive Disorder.

With all that, if any church I led was to grow, it would be by retaining the trickle of people we won.

When I asked, Roger kindly gave me copies of his lesson material. And it launched my intentional effort in New Convert Care. It has worked and is still working!

Where we were pastor at that time, there was little attractive about our church - a metal building, cold or hot dependent on the season. The concrete floor was not level and the raw wood on the platform was ugly. We had no transfer growth - there were churches in every direction more attractive than the Vidalia Revival Center. But we grew. The church's growth to over 100 came by keeping the people we won.

Eventually, more lessons were developed. Other pastors heard about what we were doing and wanted copies of the lessons. The requests came so often that the first set of lessons were published as Take Root. This expanded to Bear Fruit - addressing Christian responsibilities. And then Fitly Framed was added. Fitly Framed is based on Romans 12's listing of Motivational Gifts and was a key part of getting converts involved.

I realized the need for something to put in convert's hands at the point of conversion. So Ten - Your First Ten Days was written. It is an interactive booklet given to converts by an Altar Counselor immediately after they were converted.

I was also learning what others were doing to help newcomers build friendships. Fellowship Families and social events at our home became the norm.

From Art Hodges, my friend who pastors in San Diego, I learned the power of a structured welcome of newcomers and the significance of having a Graduation Celebration for each group that completed the courses.

It has been a blast! Seeing converts grow into Music Directors, Pastors, Administrative Pastors, Financial Secretaries, members of a praise team, ushers, song writers, authors, local church ministry leaders, tech gurus, and teachers who love children has been more of a thrill than the hundreds baptized.

    This really matters!

Disciple-making is the mandate Christ left His church. Becoming a disciple starts with conversion, but far too often there is no planned effort beyond the person's conversion.

In time, I was invited by multiple pastors and organizational leaders to provide training on how to keep converts. Travel costs are expensive and many did not have opportunity or access. So Lane and I spent hundreds of hours developing the material into an online course.

And Mastering Disciple-making came into existence.

This content has been taught in Australia, the Philippines, and numerous settings in North America. A church organization in New Zealand uses these concepts to train ministers seeking license. Over 300 pastors have been trained to Master Disciple-making. And over 100 pastors have been part of the online course.

An intentional strategy to retain and develop converts still works.

In our current pastorate:  Dave, Joel, Linda, Chris, Karla, Jason, Shelley, Misty, Sam, and others are testimonies to the effectiveness of an intentional strategy for disciple-making.

Our son, Lane, has planted a church in North Atlanta. The church has blossomed. He applies the principles of Mastering Disciple-making in a growing church plant. He provides training for church planters in a segment of the online course.

If Lane and I can do this - so can you!
